What do you want in life? Focus and Action make it happen!

We all have things that we want and dream about in our lives. Those vary greatly from person to person, but nonetheless, we all have things for which we strive. From careers, to traveling to a faraway land, to helping the less fortunate, to meeting that someone special. How do we get these things?

The mere fact of wanting something will not make it happen most of the time. It does require some effort on our part. Here are a couple of things that we can do to help make things happen in our lives.

Change your focus

The mind can be an amazing tool. How you choose to use it can make a huge difference in one’s life. The things that we choose to focus on will most likely keep showing up – good or bad. So, why not focus on the good to help you get what you want? Daniel Chidiac in an article titled “Shift your focus. Get what you want” makes the point:

“Don’t make things you don’t want a priority in your life. If you do, they will consume your reality”


Clarity – Be specific in the things that you focus on. Write down what it is you want. What is the result that you are looking for? Life can be complex and we are often pulled in many different directions. Being deliberate to focus on the things you want and that are important to you will require some effort, but the results will be worth it.

Take Action

After we have shifted our focus to those things that we want in life, we need to be proactive in making them happen. Having focus is one thing, but there needs to be deliberate actions we take to help these wants/dreams become a reality.


Have a plan – Think about what is required to get to the result you are looking for. What steps need to be taken and in what order? Write it down. Refer to it often.

Be deliberate – See what you can do each day to keep you moving in the right direction. Even small steps go a long way.

Be flexible – Things may not always go as planned. Make adjustments, but keep your focus.  It’s OK to adjust the plan if needed, but keep looking towards the end result. 

Be confident – Believe that what you are focusing on will come to fruition. Self-doubt can unravel many plans that we have.

This may sound a little simplistic, but I think it is a good starting point and something to consider as we live our lives and make plans for the future.
